Monument at 1909 Cemetery
North Congress & Ross Cannon Street
One of the projects under taken last year by the YHS was to erect a monument to memorialize the York Cotton Mill Village 1909 smallpox outbreak victims.
The 1909 gravesite located at Hwy. 49 (North Congress) and Ross Cannon Street was discovered by Yorktowne Village owners while clearing a section of their property along Hwy. 49. Most of the headstones found were broken with only two still standing and only one having legible engraving.
Scott Hollis, president of YHS, did some research at the McCelvey Historical Center. He searched through Yorkville Inquirer issues of that period. Check-out excerpts from some of the news articles that Scott found in his search:
